  3. Summer Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Course

Summer Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Course

The UAMS Mindfulness Program will offer a Summer Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course.  The in-person course starts with an orientation session on June 12. Course enrollment is open to UAMS faculty, staff, students, interns, residents, and trainees as well as the members of the public. The course registration fee is $300, and UAMS employees will receive a $75 discount. The first four UAMS registrants will receive a tuition waiver to take the course for free. Other discounts and scholarships are available on request.

An evidence-based, intensive eight-week, nine-session training course in mindfulness awareness, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction classes meet weekly for about two hours and for an all-day session near the end of the course. The all-day session allows participants to immerse themselves more deeply in the practices of mindfulness meditation and mindful movement. The MBSR course will enable participants to systematically deploy these tools as well as to mindfully explore healthier relationships with the day-to-day challenges and demands of life. We offer a peaceful, safe and supportive learning environment for all program participants.

Participants of the course will learn how to develop practical skills and techniques that can help them cultivate positivity, inner strength, and peace, which can be useful in times of difficulty, stress, illness, and pain.

All classes meet from 6 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 19 – Aug. 7. In the sessions, participants can expect instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle stretching and mindful movement exercises, group dialogue and discussions and mentored instructions on MBSR meditation practices. They also will receive printed and digital course materials and other resources.

A growing body of research demonstrates that mindfulness is strongly associated with emotional well-being; less anxiety, depression and stress; maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise; and satisfying personal relationships.

To register visit Mindfulness.UAMS.edu. For questions, contact UAMSMindfulnessProgram@uams.edu.

The course is co-taught by Amber Teigen, DMSc, PA-C, and Pele Yu, MD, who are certified mindfulness instructors and faculty of the UAMS Mindfulness Program. Classes will be held in-person in the College of Health Professions building, Building #7A.
